Abstract

The project approaches the problem of infections and contamination produced by pathogens found on the everyday use devices, such as mobile phones and medical devices that use touch screens. The main scope of this project is to provide an efficient method for obtaining antimicrobial coatings applied on the replaceable polymer covers of such devices. In this way the antimicrobial efficiency can be periodically renewed by simply changing the protection cover, providing an additional protection against potential infections. The technology used for deposition will be based on environmental friendly and clean solutions such as physical vapour deposition techniques. The active antimicrobial element will consist of nanostructured silver embedded in an oxide matrix, providing both stability and potential increased antimicrobial efficiency. The technical solution will be implemented on laboratory scale, providing the elements needed for future upscaling and industrial production. The assessment and validation of antimicrobial activity of coatings will be performed during the project, counting different versions of the coatings and combined synergetic effects. The project will also have a social component, proposing to evaluate the awareness degree of the potential users of antimicrobial covers on the necessity of such a product, through the implementation of questionnaires for different target groups. In this way a complete cycle will be tackled, starting with development of the method for producing the antimicrobial foils, validation of their functional quality, ending with assessment of their potential utility for the end users.
